What benefits does RFID technology offer for museum collection management?
Time:2026.01.24 Visit:6

The application of RFID technology can help with the following aspects of museum collection management:

First, simplify the book borrowing and returning process. Currently, in addition to optical barcodes, libraries also affix magnetic strips to each book for security reasons to prevent unauthorized removal. By applying RFID technology, RFID tags can replace barcodes and magnetic strips, eliminating the need for demagnetization and remagnetization during book borrowing and returning.

Secondly, it speeds up inventory operations. Because barcode readers require close proximity and unobstructed access to read barcodes, each book must be removed from the shelf during inventory. RFID tags, however, transmit signals via radio waves and can read data from dozens of RFID tags at once, simplifying the inventory process.

Third, it assists in finding books that are not on the shelves or have been misplaced. The use of radio wave sensors makes this book-finding process much easier.

Fourth, self-service book borrowing and returning. With the addition of self-service borrowing and returning equipment, readers can handle book borrowing and returning independently. Furthermore, the RFID system itself is an advanced EAS system, so RFID technology enables these venues to achieve true "open shelves," allowing readers to borrow and return books entirely on their own.
